Shawn Carey is a senior at Wilkes University. He is a Communication Studies major with interests in Broadcast Media and Journalism, as well as Public Relations and Organizational Communication. Shawn transferred to Wilkes University during the fall 2012 semester. Since then, he has been involved with many student activities and clubs on campus.
Currently, Shawn serves as the Social Media and Website Manager for Wilkes University’s student-run newspaper, The Beacon. In addition, he currently serves on the Board of Directors for Zebra Communications, a student-run public relations firm. There, he serves on two account teams for BEPA Studios and for the Wilkes University Department of Communication Studies. As well as serving on those account teams, Shawn is a contributing writer for the Department of Communication Studies newsletter, The Medium.
Shawn has interned with WBRE-TV/WYOU-TV working with producers. He has also interned with the Wilkes University Department of Marketing Communications.
In addition to those activities, Shawn serves as the Student Coordinator of the Tom Bigler Journalism Conference. The conference is an annual event hosted by the Department of Communication Studies and welcomes more than 200 local and regional high school students to Wilkes University each year in April. The conference also hosts the annual Journalism competition.
In July 2014, Shawn had the distinct privilege to present a research paper that he co-authored with Dr. Jane Elmes-Crahall at the annual Congress of Political Economists International Conference. Shawn presented the paper, entitled, “Media Framing of “Fracking” in Two Competing Newspapers’ Coverage in Northeastern Pennsylvania: Part One of a Two-Part Study” in Zurich, Switzerland. The paper analyzed two publications in Wilkes-Barre and their reporting of natural gas and marcellus shale. The pair is currently working on part two of their study. In January 2015, Shawn learned he would be presenting his senior research project at the Eastern Communication Association’s Undergraduate Scholars conference held annually in the spring.
Outside of the department, Shawn serves as the President of BACCHUS, a peer-mentoring group educating students on a variety of health and wellness topics. He also serves as a member of the Student-Affairs Cabinet.
He works as an associate producer for WBRE-TV/WYOU-TV in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He also works as a student leader within the office of Advancement/Development at Wilkes University for the Phonathon calling program. Shawn graduated from Blue Ridge High School in 2011. He is the son of Kenneth and Wendy Carey of New Milford, PA.
