“Anyone can be an Ally” Movie Screening

With the ongoing debate of LGBT rights, Wilkes’ Office of Diversity Initiatives is sponsoring a movie that will affect all students.

“Anyone Can be an Ally” is a movie directed by Brian McNaught that aims at creating a respectful environment both in the classroom and workplace for those in the LGBT community.

The event was held on Oct. 3 from 3-5 pm. in the ballroom of the Student Union Building.

“The purpose of the event is to create an environment, here at Wilkes, that is inclusive of all people,” Associate Director of Diversity Initiatives Erica Acostas said.

The event was sponsored by the Office of Diversity Initiatives and the Northeastern Pennsylvania Diversity Education Consortium.

According to NEPDEC’s website, “NEPDEC’s mission is to create a more inclusive, dynamic culture in our region and to prepare for increasingly complex and diverse communities and workplaces.” The organization encompasses many other community organizations, including Wilkes University.

Students who attended the event were able to watch the movie and gain an understanding of what the movie was about. Also, the director of the film was there through Skype.

“It was touching, moving…it hit home for me” said one student, “I have a gay brother, and you don’t need to be gay to be supportive and understanding.”
