WSOC: 103rd minute heartbreaker sinks Wilkes in final

Wilkes is certainly no stranger to overtime, or even double overtime, but in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom final, it would be visiting Misericordia who prevailed in double overtime.

Misericorida’s Alex Gallgher sent home the heartbreaking goal off a free ball in the 103rd minute.

While both teams managed a “not-to-lose” strategy, by taking limited shots in the offensive stalemate, the championship contest was bound for overtime. And why not overtime to decide this championship?

In a crowd similar to that of a Colonel Football game, the announced crowd of 513 made Schmidt Stadium a true playoff atmosphere. The game featured playoff atmosphere “oohs” and “ahs” from the fans in attendance.

The Lady Colonels thought they had scored in the 15th minute when Megan Lercara dumped a free ball into the penalty area to Emily Wirth. After hitting Wirth’s right hip, the ball bounced toward the Misericordia netminder, Alyssa Pojero, who made an attempt to secure the ball. In a flurry of action, Elise Brubaker’s right foot and Pojero’s hands came together rapidly. Brubaker would win the battle by seeing the ball ricochet into the back of the net, but the official ruled that the Lady Cougars goalkeeper had control of the ball before Wilkes knocked it loose.

Gallagher made the hearts of Schmidt Stadium sink toward the end of the first half when her lofted shot sailed extremely close to the crossbar. It would float high, but the Colonel faithful could feel the tension.

Misericordia would dominate the early portion of the second half before the Lady Colonels saw their next scoring opportunity.

The Lady Colonels now put their hopes into an NCAA at-large or Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) bid to be announced this week.
