Shawn Carey

Shawn Carey is new addition to The Beacon, coming in as a sophomore transfer student for the
Fall 2012 semester. He is a Communication Studies major with interests in Journalism and
Broadcast Media. He graduated from Blue Ridge High School in 2011 and spent a semester at
Lock Haven University, then came back home to work on his general education requirements.
Shawn was very involved in his high school newspaper, the Raider Reader. He started as a
freshman and attained Co Editor-in-Chief his senior year. He was also involved with his high
school Yearbook committee, The Torch, and attained Editor his senior year as well. Being a part
of those two activities, Shawn found his passion for journalism and decided it was the career for
him. He has competed at a regional level at the Tom Bigler Journalism Conference offered by
Wilkes University. There he won the individual award for Best Page Layout/Design and won the
group award for Best Overall Newspaper. It was his participation in this conference that made
him choose Wilkes University. Here at Wilkes, Shawn is involved with The Beacon, Wilkes
World, and WCLH 90.7. While Shawn is a student at Wilkes he hopes to become a very familiar
face in the Communications Department.
