Wilkes University students say goodbye to greenway; hello to construction fences.

The sound of dance music could be heard all over the Wilkes University campus last Tuesday night as students celebrated their last night on the greenway. The greenway will be shut down to house construction equipment used to build the new science SHE building. The next morning marked the closing of all gates surrounding the new science building construction site.

The University Programming Board hosted the event which featured a free food and music by a DJ for all students. The grassy strip was crawling with students playing “greenway” games such as volleyball, badminton and the ever popular frisbee. Donuts, coffee and hot chocolate were also available for students who attended the party that ran from 7p.m-9p.m.

“My friends and I went out and had a good time,” said sophomore business major Allison Kristofco, “even though it’s unfortunate that we won’t be able to use that space for a while.”

Programming Board said the event was a great success with 100 donuts taken by students within the first 10 minutes of the party’s start, signaling a high attendance from the campus.

Last Wednesday, the greenway was officially closed with fences now surrounding its border from Evans Hall to the end of Breiseth Hall in order to prepare for the construction of the $35 million state of the art science building. A groundbreaking was held March 1st for the 72,500 square-foot building which will open its doors by Fall Semester 2013. The building was predominantly financed by donations and tax exempt bonds the school possesses.
