HERSHEY, Pa. – Rebounding isn’t just for shots, it’s for games too. For the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, they rebounded in a big way on Tuesday night, defeating the Hershey Bears in Game Three of the Atlantic Division Semifinals at Giant Center, 4-3 in overtime.
The Penguins now hold a 2-1 series lead, and aim to eliminate their foes from Chocolatetown on Thursday night in Game Four.
WBS nabbed an early lead with captain Phil Kemp tallying a goal just over three minutes into the first period. Mikhail Ilyin scored just about three minutes later for the first time in his AHL career to push the lead to two.
Hershey were right back in it however when Ivan Miroshnichenko lit the lamp at the halfway mark of the opening period. Late on in the period, Bogdan Trineyev leveled the game, 2-2.
The Bears scored their third unanswered goal when Brett Leason found twine 37 seconds into the second period.
From there it was back an forth as Sergei Murashov and Clay Stevenson traded save for save, much like the series has gone thus far.
Late on in the third, with desperation setting in, the Penguins pulled their netminder, allowing the extra attacker onto the ice.
Avery Hayes took that man-advantage and used it to his own advantage, sniping the puck past Stevenson and tying the game at three.
In overtime, the Penguins got their win and completed a comeback for the ages, with Rutger McGroarty tipping a shot from Gabe Klassen into the net for the winner.
Between the pipes, Murashov recorded 26 saves for WBS, while Stevenson made 23 stops for the Bears.
The two teams return to GIANT Center on Thursday, May 7 for a 7:00 p.m. puck drop. If the Penguins claim victory, they’ll move on to the Atlantic Division Finals.
