Super Bowl 60 (SBLX) , featuring the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, will feature a physical, back-and-forth battle with championship stakes on the sidelines.
This game is full of excitement and opportunity for both teams. Seattle is searching for their first Super Bowl win since 2013, while New England is looking for their first Lombardi trophy since 2018.
The last time these two teams met in the Super Bowl was in 2015, where the Patriots won 28-24. Back then it was Russell Wilson and Tom Brady, but tis time around, it’s a clash between MVP candidate Drake Maye and Sam Darnold.
The Seahawks signed Darnold, their current quarterback, to a three-year contract this past offseason. Over the last two seasons, Darnold has won the most games out of any active quarterback and has brought Seattle to their first Super Bowl in 11 years.
The story of Darnold is an inspiring one as he was once with the New York Jets. He was then traded to the Carolina Panthers, where he had a short stint before the San Francisco 49ers picked him up Darnold to back up Brock Purdy. Darnold then signed with the Minnesota Vikings and won 14 games last season.
The Vikings decided not to retain Darnold because they wanted to see what first round pick JJ McCarthy had after being out with an injury his first season in the NFL. Now, Darnold is one win away from being a Super Bowl champion with Seattle.
In his eighth season with his fifth team, amongst quarterbacks such as Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield, and Lamar Jackson in the 2018 draft class, Darnold has made a Super Bowl before all of them.
Drake Maye, quarterback of the Patriots, has been an MVP candidate all season and continues to find different ways to win without relying on eye-popping statistics. Maye has thrown four touchdowns and two interceptions, and now leads New England to a match vs the league’s top-ranked defense.
Mike Vrabel has done a tremendous job with the Patriots in his first season as their head coach and has put himself in the conversation as Coach of the Year. Previously, the last two seasons have been uncharacteristic by Patriots’ standards as they finished with a record of 8-26.
Immediately after hiring Vrabel, they won 14 games this year while defeating the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, and Denver Broncos in the playoffs. Vrabel has changed the culture in New England and has restored their old ways of winning.
Seattle’s defense in the playoffs has been very successful in forcing turnovers and getting the ball back to the offense, which will be something to look forward to in this Super Bowl. Will Seattle’s defense dictate the outcome of the Super Bowl? Or will Maye and his rushing ability be able to avoid sacks while using his athleticism to his advantage?
Maye has had issues with ball security this postseason. In each game, he has thrown an interception along with six total fumbles, three of which he lost.
New England’s road to the Super Bowl has been much different than Seattle’s. Coming off a 10-7 win over the Broncos, where the home team did not have starting quarterback Bo Nix due to a season-ending ankle injury. Seattle is coming off a dominant win over the 49ers and a gutsy win over the Rams.
Super Bowl LX will be one to remember as both of these teams clash against each other for the first time since 2015.
