Wilkes women’s lacrosse inches closer to playoff berth

Lady Colonels improve to 11-2 with 18-10 win over Misericordia in Freedom Conference play April 23.

The Lady Colonels lacrosse team led Misericordia at half time 8-3 and outscored then 10-7 in the second half as Wilkes picked up a very important Freedom Conference win that puts them even close to sealing up a playoff berth.

Not only is Wilkes a step closer to playoffs the Lady Colonels eared their 11th win, this is a school record for most wins in a single season, and they now stand 11-2 and 3-2 in the Freedom Conference. Misericorida falls to 6-8 on the year and 3-2 in the Freedom Conference.

“It is such a rewarding feeling to know that our team is finally getting recognized for our talents,” senior Gabby Ford said of the 11th win. “I’m proud of all of us and our hard work is finally paying off.”

Wilkes opened the game with a 5-0 and didn’t allow Misericordia to score until there was 13 minutes remaining in the first half. Madeleine Brownsey, Gabby Ford, Tori Keer, Sara Gilbert and Carley Smith all scored for Wilkes.

Misericordia did get a goal before Wilkes extended the lead to 8-1 with three minutes remaining in the half.

Wilkes outshot Misericordia 29-9 the first half while only committing seven turnovers.

“I think the game went really well. We played strong the full 60 minutes,” said senior Olivia Dworak. “Our attack was really able to handle the ball, get to goal, and score on a really good goalie.  Our defense played a great game.  We were able to knock down passes, cause turnovers, and get the ball out of the defensive zone with our goalie making big saves.”

In the second half the Cougars started scoring bringing it to 8-4. Wilkes responded quickly, extending the lead to 9-4. Wilkes and Misericordia went back and forth throughout the second half, but the Lady Colonels came out top with a 15-10 win.

Wilkes outshot the Cougars 45-23 for the game, picked up 26 ground balls and won the draw controls by a tally of 19-11. Wilkes will be back at it Saturday when it hosts Eastern University in their season finale.

Wilkes will honor its seniors before the game. The game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
