Ford has high expectations for Lady Colonels lacrosse

Gabby Ford has led the Colonels to a hot start with her impressive numbers on the field.

The Wilkes Women’s Lacrosse team is off to an impressive 6-0 start in non-conference play, Gabby Ford has led the blue and gold with her spectacular play on the offensive side as well as on the defensive.

Ford started in all 14 games last season and was also a second-team Freedom Conference selection. Ford led the Colonels in four categories last season ground balls (77), draw controls (68), attempted shots (106), and she caused the most turnovers (36).

She is Wilkes’ all-time scorer with 174 goals and was also named a captain this season.

“Gabby is a workhorse,” head coach  Kammie Towey191 said, and I think the girls on the team look at how hard she plays and want to emulate her. She is also very vocal on and off the field.”

Ford leads the Lady Colonels in four categories: caused turnovers (13), game winning goals (3), draw controls (30), and ground balls (27). She is 22 for 31 of shot on goal, her percentage is an impressive .775, which is second on the team, however, her numbers increase tremendously each week.

“My goals for this season are to lead the team on and off the field and continue being an overall player,” Ford said.

She plans on making it back to the conference playoffs and getting further than this past season in which they lost in the first round to Arcadia.

“We have almost all our starters returning,” Ford said. “This season we do not lack in experience and now we know what it takes to win in important games.”

The Lady Colonels are away at Cedar Crest College at 1 p.m. March 22, against the Falcons.
