Royals rack up runs in late inning rally; defeat Wilkes

Nine innings wasn’t enough time to settle the score as the University of Scranton beat the Wilkes Colonels this past Wednesday in MAC baseball play. The 11-inning battle resulted in a conference loss for the Colonels.

The Royals laid on the runs as they  gained eight runs in the first frame and added four more to jump to a commanding lead after three innings. The third frame saw the Colonels in a 12-1 hole.

Junior Carmen Lopresto and freshman Dan Pisanchyn started the Colonels offense by both having hits to score Wilkes first run.

Senior leader Matt Ruch had good eye as he earned a walk while the bases were loaded giving the Colonels an easy score. Lopresto kept his offensive ways going with an RBI in the fourth inning en route to the Colonels coming back with a score of 12-5.

Lopresto had another RBI in the fifth inning and Wilkes pulled within three runs making it 12-9 going into the sixth inning. Lopresto would have an integral part in the winning run as he singled with two outs in the ninth to tie the game 12-12. Lopresto finished the day going five for seven and five RBIs. Freshman Tim Benner added three RBIs.

The Colonels late offensive spurt however did not last.

The game would remain tied until the eleventh inning where the Colonels saw the Royals score seven runs en route to the win.

Colonel Senior Mark Siebel made the last home game memorable however by breaking a school record. Siebel made his 60th appearance becoming the schools all time leader in appearances.

“It feels great to be in the record books,” Siebel said. “Despite the loss, I am still proud to be a Colonel.”
