Student Government met on April 15th to discuss a new club’s recognition, several funding requests and some changes to the SG Constitution.
According to the treasurer’s report, the current budget is about $24,000.
Brett Townsend gave the first presentation on behalf of the proposed Table Tennis club. He explained that the club would spend its $300 initial grant on paddles and other supplies. The motion passed to recognize the Table Tennis club.
Next, Beck Urie requested $3,000 in funding for the WEBS summer camp. WEBS (We’re Empowered By Science) is a campus program that aims to get local kids interested in STEM careers. WEBS runs an annual summer camp for middle and high school students.
Tuition is $300 per camper, and 25% of campers are on a scholarship to afford it. $3,000 in funds would cover the tuition of ten campers. The board will make a decision on funding approval next week.
Brandon Powell made a funding request for FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). He emphasized this organization’s community service and fundraisers.
This year’s national FBLA conference takes place in Las Vegas in June. FBLA requested $3,150 to cover members’ travel and accommodation expenses. The board will come to a decision on this proposal next week.
Hannah Winter made a funding request for the CFC to attend this year’s Focus conference. The Christian Fellowship Club hosts campus Bible studies and other events where students can share their faith.
The DiscipleMakers’ Focus conference is a major gathering of Christian students. It will take place in Newville, Pennsylvania in May. CFC requested $2,400 to cover the cost of attending. The board will determine funding allocation next week.
Matilda Masten requested funding for the APhA (American Pharmacists Association). She noted that Wilkes’ APhA has appeared on The Today Show during American Pharmacists Month (October).
This May, the APhA Institute is hosting a conference on substance use disorders in Salt Lake City, Utah. APhA requested $1896 to cover travel and other expenses. The board will come to an agreement on this request next week.
Board members Krisha Patel and Adam Butterwick then reviewed the proposed changes to the Student Government constitution. This topic had previously been covered last week. One significant change was to increase required member participation from 15 to 20 hours. The board approved all changes with some minor word tweaking.
Finally, the board discussed Saturday’s Big Event. Members volunteered for tasks such as serving food and picking up T-shirts.
The meeting moved on to committee work and then adjourned.
