Wilkes University will welcome students, faculty, and staff to the 8th Annual Diversity and Leadership Student Conference on Oct. 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Henry Student Center. The event is coordinated by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion in partnership with Civic Engagement and has become one of the most anticipated fall programs on campus.
The conference theme this year, “Run Your R.A.C.E. (Respect. Advocacy. Community. Empowerment),” reflects the program’s focus on developing student leadership skills while encouraging participants to think critically about how diversity, equity, and inclusion intersect with everyday life at Wilkes and beyond.
The multi-room format, taking place in the JPAC, Savitz Lounge, and Miller Room, will allow attendees to choose sessions most relevant to their interests. Past conferences have addressed issues ranging from allyship and advocacy to navigating difficult conversations.
In addition to workshops, the event provides valuable networking opportunities. Students will meet others from across campus who share an interest in leadership and community engagement.
Now in its eighth year, the Diversity and Leadership Student Conference has become a cornerstone event in Wilkes’ commitment to preparing students for leadership in a global society. Its longevity reflects not only the dedication of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion but also the consistent student interest in programming that addresses social responsibility and cultural understanding.
For many, the conference serves as a steppingstone to deeper involvement in campus life. Students who attend often go on to take active roles in student organizations, volunteer projects, or advocacy initiatives. The lessons and skills gained, whether in communication, collaboration, or cultural awareness, tend to reach well beyond the walls of the student center.
This year’s theme, “Run Your R.A.C.E.,” emphasizes four values that organizers hope participants will carry forward:
Respect for diverse perspectives and identities. Advocacy for causes and communities in need. Community as a foundation for leadership and belonging. Empowerment to create change in personal and professional settings.
The goal is to ensure that every student leaves with both inspiration and practical strategies.
Students interested in attending can RSVP through the official registration form. Organizers encourage participants to sign up early so that facilitators can plan accordingly for space, materials, and discussion groups. The event is free and open to all Wilkes students.
Questions can be directed to Erica Acosta ([email protected]) or Catie Becker ([email protected]), both of whom are closely involved in coordinating the program.
The conference will take place just a few weeks before the midpoint of the fall semester, giving students an opportunity to reflect on their academic and extracurricular goals while building new connections. Whether it is a student’s first time attending or their fourth, the program continues to highlight the role diversity and leadership play in shaping the Wilkes experience.
