University student found dead in dorm room

Wilkes University sophomore Jonathan Ratchko was found unconscious in his dorm room in Ross Hall Monday night.

The Luzerne County 911 Emergency Center was notified, and Ratchko was pronounced dead by the Luzerne County Coroner’s Office at 6:16 p.m., according to the Wilkes-Barre Police Department.

The coroner said that his death is not the result of foul play, and an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning at 9 a.m., according to other published media reports.

“To all of Jonathan’s family and friends, we offer our deepest sympathies and ongoing support,” said Wilkes University President Patrick Leahy in an email to the campus. Funeral arrangements will be announced once scheduled.

Wilkes held an open grief counseling session on Tuesday at 3 p.m., and is holding an additional session on Nov. 12 at 11 a.m. in the Savitz Lounge on the second floor of the Henry Student Center. Any students who wish to make individual appointments are urged to contact the Office of Campus Counseling at Passan Hall at 570-408-4370.
