With Spring Break out of the way and the semester halfway done, Programming Board started off spring with a magical event. Magic-Roni and Cheese was held last Thursday March 12. Different types of mac and cheese were served to a performance by comedy magician Trent James, the night was filled with laughs and good food.
The event started off with the attendees being able to grab mac and cheese from three different establishments around town: Mission BBQ, Chick-fil-A, and Wawa.
Jenny Nguyen, one of the event organizers, said, “We chose these vendors because [the Programming Board members] took a vote on our favorites. Plus the fact that they delivered and were local, not that hard of a choice.”
Nguyen continued, “We felt this event was a good way to incorporate some food and a show because we don’t do shows that often. We normally do stuff like bingos, so it’s nice to bring a show and support vendors.”
Nguyen also went into a bit of detail with how long the process took to set up this event and get everything put into place. She said, “Booking the magician took the longest because we had to choose one we liked. Because of this, it took maybe 3 weeks to a month to set up the whole thing.”
She said they were in between two different magicians, but the one they ended up choosing left the crowd in awe and rolling with laughter.
Trent James, a comedy magician, has been performing for quite some time. He has been given over twenty awards, including being the youngest to receive the Milbourne Christopher Award, a prestigious award given to many notable magicians in the past including David Copperfield and Penn & Teller.
When asked about his reaction to winning, he said “They only give a few of these out a year to professional magicians and there’s such a long list of incredible people. Now, I’m not saying that because I’m in it, but more that I feel so lucky and honored to be included.” He also revealed during his show how magic actually runs in his family.
“My dad is an amateur magician. When he was a kid, he was in magic a lot, then he got out of magic for a while. After my brother and I were born, he picked up the hobby again.”
James went on to explain how after seeing a magic show at his school, he got excited about it and told his dad, who had begun showing him tricks that he learned, sparking James’ need to pursue this passion further, leading him to where he is now.
Programming Board will continue to have events every Thursday night, with their next one being Hobbies Bingo on March 19. Anyone interested in keeping up with what Programming Board has in store can follow them on Instagram @wilkesupb.
