Wilkes Programming Board took a trip to Lyndhurst, New Jersey on Sept. 20 to enjoy an afternoon of honor and chivalry at Medieval Times.
Medieval Times is a dinner theater event for all ages that hosts a fantasy-themed experience that includes animal presentations and knights jousting for the kingdom’s entertainment.
Upon entering the castle, guests are welcomed by staff, who are called serfs and wenches and in Programming Board’s case, are greeted as esteemed VIP guests. Each student was given a VIP pass, a paper crown, a free group photo and front seats to the row of their designated knight.
Before the show began, students were given free time to roam around the castle halls and purchase merchandise spanning from plastic tiaras and foam swords to ceramic dragons. There was even a display featuring the kingdom’s royal falcon who was presented during the show and flew above the audience.
During the show, the guests were given a full dining experience including an appetizer, entree and dessert. To embrace the olden times the show would take place in, there were no utensils given. The appetizer was hearty and delightful tomato bisque with a side of toasted bread to dip into the soup.
When the king and queen of the event called for the feast, the entree given out was herb-crusted chicken with a side of buttered corn and potato.
During this time, the knights began to make their way into the arena with plenty of applause coming from the crowd.
Towards the end of the show, the dessert offered was a small chocolate eclair which was a nice sweet treat after the hefty dinner.
Wilkes was also mentioned prior to the show’s start in which the king granted the students a merry welcome to the kingdom.
The storyline played throughout the show was entertaining and garnered much participation from the crowd. The fight choreography was well-paced and exciting; intrigue surrounded the seats with all eyes glued to the fights.
After all was said and done, students returned to the bus and couldn’t wait to talk about the extraordinary afternoon they’ve had. The bus was packed and full of smiles, indicating that this Wilkes Programming Board event was a major success.
