“A Moment of Magic” was introduced to the campus community on Sept. 9.
The group actually already has roots in Wilkes-Barre, but the university never had its own chapter.
Now, one student is trying to change that, hopefully with the help of her classmates.
A Moment of Magic is a national organization dedicated to visiting medically vulnerable families, mostly children in foster care or hospitals.
It is also focused on “harnessing the power of joy, fostering connection and supporting mental health,” said Sofia Quaglia, a junior and president of the Wilkes chapter of A Moment of Magic. Although members are often associated with dressing up as beloved princesses and other characters, that is not all there is to do.
“We’re not allowed to dress up as characters yet, but maybe one day,” Quaglia said.
For the first few years of the club, the students will be focusing on being Magic Makers.
Magic Makers are members that plan visits with children where they get to do fun crafts and activities.
“Play isn’t a distraction; it’s what makes people feel better,” Quaglia continued.
The Magic Makers also have an item called a “Magic Maker Bag” which has fun activities for including coloring worksheets and pages with mental health tips for everyone.
The group is still looking for members of the club as well as members for its E-board.
“We have emphasis on community, inclusivity, fun, integrity, and imagination.”

“…many hospitals are stretched thin, with limited psychosocial support—meaning the emotional and social care that helps children cope with the challenges of illness,” the Moment of Magic website states. “Our programs fill that gap by delivering child-led, joy-centered experiences that strengthen mental health, build resilience, and create meaningful moments of connection.”
