Sign-ups sought for April 9 blood drive

Wilkes University, in cooperation with the American Red Cross, will be having its fourth blood drive of the year from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 9 in the Henry Student Center lounge.

Megan Boone Valkenburg, community service coordinator at Wilkes University, said that the blood drive has been successful in the past at providing donations for hospitals in the area.

“One donation can save up to three lives,” she said. “The three uses of one donation include plasma, red blood cells, and full blood transfusions for patients at Geisinger, Wilkes-Barre General, and hospitals in Danville.”

The last blood drive at Wilkes exceeded its target goal of 53 donors, bringing in 72 participants.

Volunteers have until April 3 to register and students also have the opportunity to sign up online, Boone said.

“Give Gab is a new system Wilkes is using,” Boone said. “It’s social media for the volunteer, posting community service events, as well as club and Student Government activities.”

Sign-ups are needed by April 3 so that the Red Cross can determine by the list of students how many nurses should be sent.
