Willy Wonka themed Study Break Party a sweet success

Chocolate cascaded down a waterfall machine, cotton candy swirled about and colorful candy decorations and a golden ticket adorned the ceilings. These colorful accents were some of the many sweet accents of the fall semester Inter-Residence Hall Study Party.

The study break party took place on Dec. 11 from 7 to 9 p.m. on the first and second floors of the Student Union Building. Each year IRHC hosts the Study Break Party as a way for students to take a break from studying and enjoy some food and fun.

The event is the last big event to occur on campus before finals begin. This year the party was themed around “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.” It included free treats such as popcorn, Wonka candy, a cupcake bar, cotton candy and pizza.

IRHC President and junior P1 pharmacy major Bethany Sharpless says this year’s theme was picked to appeal to students’ desire towards candy.

“Everybody loves candy. We tried to pick a fun theme people could get excited about,” Sharpless said.

IRHC came up with the theme from a group brainstorm. Since the theme was never tried before, they thought it would be fun to try out.

Sharpless says this year’s fall semester study break party was different because of its vast amounts of food.

“Since there is a lot of food, we made all the activities about the candy,” Sharpless says.

The activities included making long pixie stix tubes with flavored candy powder and a candy necklace and bracelet-making station.

Sharpless says this year’s study break party had a great turnout and showed that IRHC’s hard work really paid off.
