Wilson leads men’s tennis at Scranton Invitational

The Wilkes men’s tennis team had an outstanding weekend, capped off by championships in the A and C brackets, as well as runner-ups in the A, B and C brackets of the Scranton Invitational.

Stephen Wilson headlined for the Colonels winning the A bracket with 6-2, 6-3 victory over teammate Max Appello. Wilson said he is excited about his and the team’s performance so far this fall season.

“It was a great confidence booster for me, especially with the MAC Tournament coming up in a couple of weeks,” the Wilkes junior said. “The team has performed excellent thus far. I am really excited about how convincingly we have been winning.”

This weekend featured Wilson and Appello in the A final. Michael Kranz made his way to the B final for the Colonels before falling to King’s Tom Bevevino 6-2, 6-2. In the C Bracket, Alex Lefkandinos, Alex Makos, Jacob Parfianowicz, and Connor Peckham all reached the semifinals. However, the C bracket did not play through the finals.

The doubles flights also went well for the Colonels with the brother duo of Dominic and Jacob Parfianowicz winning their semifinal, while Makos and Wilson also won their semifinal. The doubles flights also were not played through the finals.

Head Coach Leicht said he was proud of how well his team performed this weekend. The Colonels had five of the six spots filled in the finals of the singles bracket and also had two doubles teams in the finals. With the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Tournament coming up Leicht has a lot to be excited about.

“We have a chance to do really well,” Leicht said. “A lot of guys are going to get to play as there are six finals flights, and three doubles flights. Last season we came home with seven of the nine flight championships.”

The MAC Individual Tournament will be hosted at Wilkes Oct. 12-13 at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
